Research: Designers letterers/Hand rendering

I have developed a passion for hand-rendered type. It has a unique quality and personality to it. I have researched designers that only use hand rendered and claim to have ‘moved away from the computer’ and only using the computer at the final stages of refining type.

  • Drop caps -large capital letter in a text block
  • Stands out.
  • Stylised.
  • Shadows = echoes.
  • Over stylised.
  • I will need to ensure my lettering will not be over stylised as it will loose the concept of type representing sound.

  • Different sizing = volume.
  • Stands out.
  • Legible.
  • Different directions = how words are said or pronounced.
  • Slanted words = How words are pronounced
  • I will need to ensure my lettering will not be over stylised as it will loose the concept of type representing sound.
  • Hische’s work has helped me to experiment more with type and be more playful with type. But I will also need to ensure that my type is not just visually appealing but also suggests sound.
